National Security

Issue: Political dysfunction and extreme levels of misinformation have led Americans to hate one another and the American public to lack faith in government at all levels.

Solutions:

  • The current election system should be transformed into a process that excludes money and centers on candidate capability to produce more reliable representatives.
  • Our federal leaders, both elected and appointed, must work alongside domestic and foreign leaders to assist in resolving disputes that threaten global stability.

  • Divisions among American cultures, communities, and ethnicities must be mended by those that lead within each faction.

  • Programs must be established to offset the extraordinary amount of influence being asserted on children and other vulnerable populations via the media.

Illegal drugs are expected to be one of the biggest threats to national security in 2024 as overdose deaths topped 100,000 in the last year, according to the Department of Homeland Security’s annual threat study.

In its report released ThursdayDHS said it expects illegal drugs produced in Mexico and sold in the United States will continue to kill more Americans than any other threat.

“While terrorists pose an enduring threat to the Homeland, drugs kill and harm far more people in the United States annually,” the report states.

Terrorists, both foreign and domestic, as well as violence and international election interference will be top threats to the U.S. in the coming year, according to a report from the Department of Homeland Security.

During the unveiling of a new approach to articulate the terrorism threat level to U.S. officials and the public, a DHS official told reporters that “challenges facing our homeland are more diverse and complex than at any time in our department’s 20-year history.”

Not only are the threats different, but the origins, layers of organization, tools and objectives of each create difficult tasks for DHS and its partners to manage.

While there is no reported credible threat, CBS News has reviewed multiple internal law enforcement bulletins and security assessments circulated in the last 48 hours that warn that homegrown and domestic violent extremists are likely to mobilize in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
